Email certification is based on a point system. You receive points for certain best practices in emailing. The ISPs access a database when your email comes in, and do a lookup of your total point score. A total of 30 points or higher has been found to be the most useful in allowing the ISPs to make the decision to deliver. Of course, you must also be LISTED in the database.

The problem for small online businesses is that the sender MUST control the email server. To date, very few, other than large companies, own their own servers. All other email servers on web hosting services are shared among many different domains and companies.

Are you doing your mailings through your own SMTP server with a dedicated static IP address under your control? Then you're eligible to participate.

Does your web host properly set your headers to show your domain and dedicated static IP address which you control as the originating sender? Is the IP address for its SMTP server certified? Then you could apply.

Otherwise, in order to be certified by iCop, you'll need to be hosted by iCop Hosting. I know folks don't necessarily like changing hosting companies. But let me tell you why I don't think you'll mind.

First, we'll be setting the email headers to show not only the IP number of the email server, but your domain IP number, too. This will be helpful since the ISPs ARE aware that your connection IP number shows.

Second, it's your solicited BULK email, i.e., newsletters, ezines and advertising campaigns that are hardest to get past the spam filters. All of these can be (and most ARE) sent directly from your domain server's email sending agent, using mailing list software.

If you have a problem getting an individual email through to someone, you can also use WebMail to send it. Then, it will show up at the gateway with nothing but your certification information.

However, as long as you set your email client to use your domain as the outgoing SMTP, you're good to go.
